When I first got my birds I bought a book about the care of finches. The best rule is to provide space as possible. I never used it during the warm months though. The minimum size of a pen containing three pairs of Zebra-sized birds is 150x50x50cm. Use a cage cover in winter, it will help to keep the warmth inside the cage. Or if it's just a bit too much, a sheer curtain would be enough. Fruits like sliced apples, oranges, grapes and melons add important nutrients to the Finch diet. I like to add millet, fresh fruits, and egg to my birds diet. If it gets to be too much, pull a curtain closed. Zebra Finches can live just fine on finch seed mix but it is better to offer your Finches a more varied diet. An east or north facing window would be fine, as long as the amount of sun is monitored. I have kept my cages across the room from north facing windows, so they got lots of light, but not too much. The cage should not be placed on the floor, but in an area that is well lit. The height of the cage is not as important as its horizontal space. Zebra finches can squeeze through surprisingly small spaces. Wires of the sides of the aviary should be about or inch apart, or possibly smaller to prevent the finches from escaping.
